| | Chicoro | ARE YOU UGLY?
In my heart and soul, I feel that women of African descent, are some of the most incredible creatures that walk this Earth. We are no better than others. But we are just as good. I do feel that we are constantly under siege and are consciously fed "myths' about ourselves. Not only do we internalize these myths, we ourselves perpetuate these very damaging myths about ourselves. Like all other women, in our time and culture, we understand that beauty is highly valued. The standards by which we are judged have us feeling and believing that we fall short of what is considered beautiful. What is worse, is that because we lack the knowledge and tools to exploit our own natural beauty, we continue to spiral downward and reluctantly and painfully accept, "Because the information that is out there does not work for me, what is said about me not meeting the established standard [of beauty] must be true." This logic is erroneus and faulty.
What is popular is based upon what works best for the average number of people. Often times what is averaged is determined by what is the majority, or at least the most powerful-economically. Often times, ladies, that is not us, as a whole. But, that does not negate the fact that we still need our esoteric or specific information that applies to us to get US where we need to be.
Hence, understand that just because something is not communicated in the popular culture does not mean it is not true. For example, just because the average article or book does not address your specific hair care, skin care of body needs, does not mean we are 'lost causes' and just don't fit .
You are beautiful and you are powerful. You are only [considered] weak and vulnerable and ugly when YOU don't know and use your power; only when you lack knowledge, especially SELF KNOWLEDGE.
Keep seeking and you will find that the only validation in this world that you will need is your own. Once you provide that self validation of "I GOT IT GOING ON!", the world will then follow suit and give it to you, too. But the validation of the world should not be your motivation. Self validation should be your goal.
The key is discovering and learning about what works for you AND applying it systematically as in within a process, on a regular basis- and continuing to do so even though results may be more than a day, week, or even a month away.
I believe it is an honor and a privilege to be able to view your albums. I would be honored to share in your hair journey! This note was inspired by a beautiful message I saw in CheekQueen's album.
