I had extensions, press & curls, and perms from ages 7-21. I decided to learn how to take care of my 4b natural hair, and I only wish I had done it sooner. Hair Journey Re-cap:
1. Last perm- August 2005
2. Transitioned with extensions- October 2005 - June 2006, off and on btw Fall 2006-Summer 2007
3. No BC; I just trimmed off the permed ends between braiding styles. I was probably completely perm-free by the summer of 2007.
4. Current length (May 2013)- less than 1/2 inch above APL

Protective Styling: I've been twisting my hair about every two weeks since November 2010. This routine has definitely protected my hair against the elements and helped me retain moisture.

SPRING 2012: I've started to alternate btw twists and twistouts/other loose styles.

Current products:
*Shampoo: Mill Creek Botanicals Biotin Shampoo
*MARCH 2012 Update: Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care: 2 in 1 Shampoo/Conditioner with Almond Oil with an ACV rinse . That shampoo is ok. I alternate with Selsun Blue Naturals Shampoo + ACV rinse.
*Deep Conditioner: Aussie 3 Min. Miracle or SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque (can be used as a leave-in)
*APRIL 2012: I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration as a detangling deep conditioner; detangling was pretty easy and my hair felt softer for days and days!
*Moisturizing (JUNE 2012): Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk (from the Coconut & Hibiscus line) on my scalp and ends. Occasional sealing with JBCO.
*AUGUST 2012: I started using Taliah Waajid Protective Bodifiying Mist as well. Good moisture and pleasant scent.
*OCTOBER 2012: I'm much more diligent about sealing with Taliah Waajid or ORS HAIRepair Vital Oils (no more JBCO for now).
*JANUARY 2013: Shea Moisture Black Soap Purification Masque clears up flakes and product buildup before shampooing without the need for the ACV rinse. It also leaves my hair feeling super soft.
*FEBRUARY 2013: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is also a great moisturizer with a smooth texture and delicious scent.

Growth was pretty slow for the first few years! It took a while to figure out what products and regimen would actually help my hair.

Above all, keeping my hair healthy is my top priority, and I'm always learning more about how versatile, manageable, and stylish it is.
