| | David King | No, I'm not going to share my personal life story for you here, I don't beleive an internet web page is the appropriate way to do that anyways. This is just a brief history of my involvement in the scale modeling hobby.
Like most scale modelers my hobby started when I was young and with a present from an adult. In my case I was 7 years old and it was Christmas, I received four model car kits, three snap and one glue kit molded in color, and thus a lifetime hobby was born. Why car kits? Suffice it to say an interest in cars runs in the family. Besides the model cars my only experiences with modeling came from an HO scale 4'X8' train layout I received for Christmas in my early teens, then a basic Lionel train set a couple years later. Like most kids in their mid to late teens I was too distracted by other interests to pay attention to scale modeling for a few years. I got back into scale modeling a little after I turned 18, at that time I discovered model contests, magazines and clubs. I was exposed to a whole new world that heretofore I was unaware of. A year later other duties called and I was out of the hobby for a couple more years. I returned to the hobby in my early twenties again, joined my first model car club and entered my first model car contest. Then a few years later came computers. I was distracted again and was submersed in the computer hobby. I even sold all my hobby related stuff, kits, tools magazines. The only items I kept were a few models that I had built. After a few years later I discovered neither I nor my credit cards could keep up with the computer hobby. I slowly started building model cars again, first a present for my father, then a simple box stock build for a contest. It actually took several years longer before I was fully immersed in the hobby again. Also about this time I got involved in the radio controlled car/truck hobby. I guess you could call these scale models that move. I started with touring car racing, but quickly discovered I did not have the budget to be competitive and for a while just enjoyed the hobby on my own. In later years I did get involved in R/C competition again. I did some touring car racing again once I had the money to be competitive but poor attitudes and poor sportsmanship drove me out of it again. I did R/C drag racing, monster truck racing, mini racing, and more recently rock crawling. I've seldom won but as long as the competition is friendly and I have fun I don't really care. Nowadays I do very little competition, getting together with some buddies and just playing around is usually enough for me. Recently I have experimented with modeling in other scales, primarily for diorama modeling. I have done one diorama in 1/87 scale, (HO) and didn't care much for that scale. I'm currently working on a 1/48 scale, (O) diorama and I beleive this suits me much better however I think I'll be mostly sticking to 1/25 scale. So, what does my scale modeling future hold? The current plan is to finish the '32 Roadster touring and the 1/48 scale diorama. After that I plan on making some interesting display bases/backdrops for my display cases. Then I plan on taking on two very big multi-year projects, a large 1/25 scale diorama and a scratch built 1/12 scale hot rod. Lately I've been fascinated with early hot rodding and have been reading everything I can on the subject. The diorama will depict a small town gas station starting where all the guys congregate to work on their "gow jobs" or "hop ups" and bench race in the late 1930's. The scratch built street rod will be made mostly of metal, (brass, aluminum, copper) and will be a unique design with influences from dry lakes racing and Indy racing.
