I'm sure everyone has seen or heard about Chris Rock's Good Hair movie. After witnessing the negative depiction of black women and their hair in Good Hair and on several talk shows, a few members of a popular online community joined forces to create, Sistas with Strands (SwS).
Sistas with Strands is a group of fabulous, black women working together in effort to change the way people perceive black women and their hair. We aim to dispel myths that black women can't have healthy, long hair. We intend to showcase black women with healthy hair at a variety of hair types, textures, colors, lengths, and state (relaxed, natural, bkt'd, texlaxed, loc'd). It is also our goal to help promote black-owned businesses.
This group will help educate, promote, inspire, and encourage black women to grow and nurture their hair. It is our hope that healthy hair practices learned and promoted will be extended to our next generation of "Sistas", our daughters, sisters, grandkids. We can prove to be a driving force to help inspire the next generation to love and appreciate the unique beauty of their natural hair. If their personal decision is to relax their hair, we want to serve as a resource to provide the necessary knowledge and techniques to have healthy, long hair.
If you are interested in submitting pictures for the campaign, check out our website sistaswithstrands.com for more details. If you are interested in joining our group, go to sistaswithstrands.ning.com

Hello Ladies!
I want to start off by thanking all of you for taking time to view my albums. I've been wearing weaves ever since I was 12 y/o, and I noticed that I retained alot of inches this way, but I ended up destroying it by overprocessing my hair with color on top of color, and applying relaxers every few weeks.
I never knew it was possible for black women that were not biracial or just plain lucky to have healthy long 'real' hair. This was all before I googled information about weaves, and came upon BHM and LHCF. The wonderful information and the beautiful progress posts has been a godsend for me. I have never 'virtually' met a group of wonderful black women that have been so forthcoming, and willing to offer support and encouragement to help me on my journey. I've learned so many things, and have been able to incorporate it into my lifestyle. Trust me ladies, I have been where you are now, and once you find a regimen that works for you and you consistently follow it, you will be amazed at your results! Trust me.
Anyway, please enjoy my fotki, and check out my frequently asked questions below. If you have a question that I haven't answered, please leave it in my guestbook and I'll be more than happy to answer. Now, how about we all get on this hair growing bandwagon?! I'll see you all at the end of the finish line!
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the answer to your hair growth? What's your regimen when you wear weaves? I usually wear my hair in a sew-in weave for three months at a time. This protective style has helped me retain all of the length that I've gained. This is the regimen that I follow with my sew-ins. Wash 1x week with Creme of Nature (white bottle with green cap) Condition w/ Mane N Tail DC 1x weekPantene Pro V relaxed and natural dc mask (really good slip) Leave in conditioner - Infusium 23 Moisturize every day by spraying a glyercin and water mix to by braids and to the hair that's left out. I also seal the ends of the hair that's left out with castor oil. Clarify 1x month w/Suave clarifying shampoo
2. How often do you wear your weaves? I usually wear my weaves for 3 months, but I've worn it for 4-5 months before. That's not recommended though.
3. What brand of weaves do you wear? Where do you buy your weaves? I wear the Extensions Plus relaxed texture weave. You can check it out at Extensions-plus.com. I've also worn Sensational Premium Now yaki. I bought it from a beauty supply store. I usually wear 14-16".
4. Where did you buy your lacefront? I purchased my lacefront directly from a chinese vendor, Holly. You can get more information by going to www.wigsandclosures.com
5. How much did your lacefront cost? My lacefront cost $200 including shipping. It took about 3 business days for me to receive it.
6. What type of lacefront did you purchase? I bought a 18" 1b light yaki unit. I used blue tape liner for the back, and mastix gum for the front.
7. What's your contact information for you weave stylist? For the Extensions plus installs, I went to Stacey. She's located in the Alex Burton salon close to the First Colony Mall. Her number is 281-881-2063. Her prices range from $150+. For the Sensational install, I went to Sonia. She charges $50. You can check her out by going to http://public.fotki.com/queensonia/. Or, contacting her by email soniashairweaving@yahoo or 281-501-0072. For the Halleys Curls install with no hair left out, I went to Shonda. Her number is 832-816-0462. Don't forget to tell them Olive referred you!!!
8. Where are you in your transition? I've been transitioning to natural hair for about 2 years. I'm not sure of the exact date because I stopped relaxing prior to find the hair boards.
9. How do you moisturize and seal your ends? I mixed glycerin and water in a spray bottle and spray that on my braids under my sew-in, and on the hair that's left out at the top. I apply castor oil to the ends of my hair that's left out when I'm done moisturizing.
10. How can you wash and deep condition with a weave? I picked up this great tip from someone on BHM. Put your shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner in separate water/applicator bottles. Dilute it with water, and pour it over your head so it reaches to your braids. Then you gently massage your scalp. This works great!
11. Where do you buy your henna and indigo? Go to hennaforhair.com for more information.
12. How are you able to transition for so long? Weave, weaves, and wet buns!!! They'll get you really far in your transition.
13. When are you planning to big chop? I don't have a scheduled time to big chop. I'm enjoying my hair length right now, and am not planning to chop anytime soon. - General Information
