So what am I? Chopped liver? When did I disappear into the background?
Time and again I pick up magazines and books and newspapers in the world I live, and each time I read, I search for me and each time I search, I am not there. The news reports the birth of a gnat yet reports nothing of me. My voice is silent. My presence overlooked. True it is partly my fault. I chose to adapt rather than make a mark. I chose to change rather than bring changes to my world.
I am a Caribbean Woman!!
Remember that and begin to know me.
Do you want to know what colour is? Let me show you my fabric, my threads with which my life is sewn. No one knows colour like a Caribbean Woman.
Ignorance is bliss and you are blissfully unaware that I am not White, I am not Chinese, I am not Negro, I am not Indian.
All respect to my sisters but I am the sum of these and more besides.
I am not American or Asian or Canadian or European. I am the sum of these and more besides.
Why then am I dismissed in such a fashion?
They make clothes and forget my bottom has curves unlike any other. When Papa God was making backsides he had perfected it by the time he was making the Caribbean Woman.
They open salons and forget my hair kinks and curls and is straight all on one head!
They say ‘pardon’ when I speak but flock to my islands to enjoy the hospitality.
Even those self-styled leaders who claim to represent me do so in their own style and quickly forget I am a Caribbean Woman.
I can fry rice, cook curry and make a pelau so sweet you would lick your fingers.
I can play pan, roll tassa and beat a drum.
So the next time you see my golden skin and my slanted eyes and my batik robe of many colours, don’t ask me where I am from.
Know that I am a Caribbean Woman and respect me as such.
Ask me about me and listen well to the music in my voice and the twang of my accent. Do not try to mold me into your understanding of who I am and you will find yourself in the presence of a Jewel unlike any other.
