- After watching my mother and older sister be natural for the past 4-5 years, I decided to begin this journey.
Not to mention moving to a new state & city far, far away from the beauticians I trust with my hair.
A few years ago I came up with 3 things I've always wanted to do with my hair: cut it short like Angela Bassett in "Waiting to Exhale", go natural, and grow locs.
On my 21st birthday, my sisters dared me to cut my hair Angela style and since they were paying, I marched to Harlem (more like took a bus, the ferry, and 3 trains) and cut it off. The stylist told me to never put extensions or micros in my hair EVER again. It was definite liberation and the bravest thing I've done with my hair in my life.
Or so I thought...
For my 22nd birthday and my graduation from college I decided to do a more drastic cut and I was never happier about my hair.
Or so I thought...
Just about every day of my life I realize that my mother is ALWAYS right and when she warned me that a short cut took more work and time than I had to patience and energy for I realized she ain't never lied!
So, here I was. Away at grad school, not pleased with the local hairstylists, and trying to stay away from the micros but, like a moth to a flame, I found myself sitting with a pile of 1B wet & wavy hair in my lap as my hair was braided. I'll admit it, I was ecstatic for the first time since moving away because micros, to me, are an old and reliable friend. I know how to take care of them, re-do them in between fresh braidings and I'm used to my face with them.
Yet one Sunday afternoon I found myself going over my monthly expenses and really hating the $150 I had to set aside to get my hair done. I had had enough!
This is when my journey began. I called my sisters, mother, and closest girl friends to share the news: I was going natural. They were all shocked and extremely supportive.
Unfortunately, I'm still very afraid of my natural look so I still have the micros in but I have not put a chemical or iron of any kind in my hair since October 2007. My supportive friend Kamaliyah turned me on to Fotki and I promise to post pictures of my natural hair, whom I have named Jalyn Marie, at the beginning of month 6 in another two weeks.
