MY EPIC HAIR STORY!

Once upon a time….......just kidding. I wish I could say that I wanted to do this because of something amazing, but I didn’t. I got my first relaxer when I was in grade 1. Couple months after that, all my hair fell out, and I had a small afro and had to go back to school where the children are cruel. But my hair grew really fast, so the teasing wasn’t that long. I begged my mom for another one because everybody on T.V. had it and I wanted it. I got relaxed again in the 4th grade and been using that creamy crack ever since then. That is until I moved from home and went to college.

Wearing my natural hair never once crossed my mind. Then I saw this artist named Goapele and her locs were so beautiful, that’s when it popped in my head, you should try your natural hair. I didn’t know of any hair care forums, I didn’t know any of the terms, I didn’t know that I was transitioning, I didn’t take any pictures or documented anything because I thought I was alone in the whole process. None of my friends would dare to do it and a lot of them didn’t understand why I wanted to do it, especially coming from where I from. So you know the remarks came, “why you want to go natural, you can’t comb it, now you in college you want to go all black power," and my favorite was, "girl you aint finna get a boyfriend looking like that.” All the comments came from close friends and family members, and yes it hurt to hear them say it, but my mind was made up because I knew I would be happy. In high school I never really cared what people thought to certain extents. I was always the safe rebel. That changed in college.

So I got my last relaxer in late Nov of 2005 and I BC on Feb 16, 2006. I didn’t take any pictures of my bc but I remember I was so impatient that I cut it after three months of transitioning and I immediately loved it until later in the day when I came home and looked in the mirror and saw shrinkage. I looked like a boy!! I didn’t know about shrinkage either. I’m telling you guys, I went into this not knowing anything; I was on my own in a new town with little friends, in college. So the first thing I did was braid it and kept it braided until I was satisfied with the length. Not until a year later I found Nappturality and Fotki, I understood more about how to care for our hair and what products to use and how to style our hair. So yeah I’ve been lurking in others albums getting hair ideas and reading forums on how to care for my hair. I just wished I would’ve known all this sooner, it would’ve taken a lot of stress off me and I would’ve enjoyed my hair more. Plus I would have taken more pictures.

Now I’m in love with my hair and I wouldn’t go back. I am slowly convincing some of my friends, but they are so afraid of what other people will think or how they will look. It’s a shame how society made a lot of females ashamed of their features. Not all, but some. It’s funny because every time I go back home to visit, everyone who sees my hair ALWAYS ask, “so you gonna loc up,” then I say, “No” then they say, “so what you gonna do with your hair” and I say, “wear it”. Like the only way to wear natural hair is in locs. My initial idea was to grow my hair for a couple of years and then loc it up, but I changed my mind after 7 months of seeing the real texture of my hair. Locs are too permanent for me, and I can’t do a lot of the styles I want to try. But sometimes they are tempting. Ok I’m going on and on, so let’s end this with I LOVE MY HAIR!!!!
