My last relaxer was in August 2002. Early in 2002, my friend Tomica (rest in peace Tomica) was actually trying to go natural, but she eventually gave up and went back to relaxing. After she tried it, I thought about it long and hard and in August I finally told my stylist that I was thinking about not relaxing anymore. She thought it was a great idea, so we began our journey.

I never really did a "big chop" because I have a huge head and I know God covered my head with a lot of hair for a reason. I had surgery in November 2002 and I recuperated for over a month, so I wanted to get my hair cut to sort of purge and give myself a little pick me up. On February 14 or 15, 2003, I got my hair cut for the only time after I stopped relaxing. At that time, we trimmed off about 5 or 6 inches and I had about 3 to 4 inches of new growth. My awesome stylist, Wendy, kept it super straight, so no one knew that I was going natural at first. Once I moved away, that changed...I struggled for a couple of years without a stylist and with 2 extremely different textures. I didn't have another haircut until I found Kim in January of 2005; now I am 100% relaxer free and loving it (most of the time).
