Hello! I'm a 34 year old single black female without children. I joined Fotki as a way to share my journey towards natural hair. My hair was chemically relaxed by my mom when I was about 8 years old. Raising 4 girls with big, full, long heads of hair, she had to do what was best for her. I thought of going natural for several years and finally after 25 years of 'lye-ing' to myself, decided to go back to what God gave me. My last relaxer was around July of 2008. My Big Chop was February 3, 2009.

I've had many people ask why I would cut off 14 inches of healthy hair when there are so many women weaving their own hair and wishing they had hair like mine. For one, the last time I relaxed my hair, my hands locked up on me and if it had not been for a friend that was home with me at the time, I would have ended up with severe 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns. Having straight hair was not worth it! Secondly, the only way to get rid of chemically relaxed hair is to cut it off! Many people do not realize this, instead they believe relaxers can be 'grown out' or will naturally revert over time.

I wanted to transition much longer but after 6 months, was not happy with having 2 textures of hair on my head and the line between the natural hair and chemically relaxed hair was way too fragile. Not to mention, I was using heat to straighten my hair weekly so that it would all appear the same. I finally got fed up with all that extra work and decided to cut it off. My biggest mistake and regret was going to a hair stylist who had never touched my hair before and did not wet my hair properly or listen to me when I told her how much new growth I had. She cut my hair very short under the assumption that the straight strands in front HAD to be relaxed hair and not my natural curl pattern. Nine months later, and the straight patch in the front left side of my head is still straight. The hair type there is 3a whereas the rest of my hair is 4a.

May 7, 2013 -- I've been away for a while. I've been natural for over 4 years. I still love my hair in spite of the setback I've been experiencing for the last 2 years. My hair completely stopped growing and I have yet to find the cause. It's either a medication or my thyroid. All of the length you see was obtained in the first 2 years of my natural journey. My hair is actually slightly shorter than it was last year because I still have to trim it occasionally. I had a length goal of being waist length by my 5th anniversary but I have no idea when or if I'll meet that goal and I'm ok with that. I thought I would be more upset because I'm use to my hair growing like weeds no matter what I do to it (including relaxing it) but, here I am trying to take very good care of it and it won't grow. The texture has also changed slightly but I'll have it resolved soon enough!
