ABOUT MY HAIR
My hair is type 4a and mildly relaxed (texlaxed) so it's still very thick and has a lot of texture. I also Henna once a month. Henna Recipe Below.

MY REGIMEN

STYLE
On an average day I typically have my hair in a braid out. I usually do half up half down styles. Wearing it up makes it more difficult for me to play with, which is a bad habit of mine. I typically don't comb or brush my hair opting to finger comb instead, but when I do I only use wide tooth seamless combs. At night, I always put my hair in a bun or plaits before bed. I'll also sleep in a snood at times but not every night. I use a snood if I'm doing a braid out or if I want to protect my curls while I'm sleeping.

WASHING
Because I do use a leave in everyday, I like to cleanse once a week or every two weeks (If I can go that long) to eliminate build up.

I use Burt's Bee's More Moisture Shampoo w/ Raspberries & Brazil nut, followed by Aubrey Organics Revitalizing Conditioner, which is my favorite conditioner ever.

After I wash, I pat my hair with a towel and then apply Rusk Sensories Smoother Passion flower & Aloe leave in texturizing conditioner. I detangle and then add a bit of coconut oil to my hair and scalp. After air drying, I apply a bit more Rusk. I used to use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Leave In, but find that adding more Rusk makes my hair softer.

After my hair has dried, I'll typically curl my hair using Caruso steam curlers.

HENNA
My henna regimen went from once monthly to doing a full head only twice a year and my roots every 6 weeks. The more frequently you henna, the darker it gets until you reach your peak color. So, now, I'm just looking to maintain the color that I have which means less frequent applications.

Here is my henna recipe.
I buy Yemeni henna from a company called Henna Sooq.

I use 150g, which is a bag and a half. I mix the henna with warm red colored tea instead of water, red wine instead of lemon (because of the color and it's acidic) and cinnamon. I don't measure things out. I just mix the tea in until the henna is the consistancy of pancake batter. If I had to guess, I'd say that I probably use 1 and 3/4 cups of tea, maybe 1/4 cup of wine and about a teaspoon of cinnamon.

I put on a plastic cap and keep the henna in anywhere from 3 hours until as long as I can stand it. The henna makes my hair so heavy that sometimes I can't deal with it for longer than 3 hours. Once, I only left it on for an hour and it came out okay. The last time, I only did my hairline and roots so I was able to sleep in it. Sleeping in henna over night is ideal for me wether doing only roots or a full head. I apply it at night before bed, put on a cap, and in the morning rinse it out. Simple.

RELAXING
I use Just For Me regular strength relaxer. I like it because it never gets my hair too straight which for me is perfect. I don't use the pre relaxer that comes with it because it makes my hair hard and therefore difficult to get through. I protect my hair with Vaseline or oil sheen instead.

I relax 4 times a year, scheduling them on the first day of every season. According to the lunar charts, solstices and equinoxes are the best days for cutting or beautifying the hair. I don't know if thats true, but I prefer to do it anyway because to me it's a nice way of starting each season fresh.

In the fall, when the weather get's cooler and the air indoor's gets drier, I will begin deep conditioning treatments on a weekly basis using a hooded hair steamer. I have no idea what my regimen will be for this, I'll most likely make it up as I go along. I will post my results here and in my album.

If anyone has any suggestions or tips for me pertaining to deep conditioning with steam, please let me know, as I have never used a hooded hair steamer before.
