Hi and welcome to my fotki.

This is my very first fotki. I have not mastered the use of it yet but when I have a little more time, I will spend it trying to learn how to use this wonderful site. I joined because of a hair buddies challenge on Long hair care forum - that I just joined and of course for my own passion for hair.

This marks the beginning of my hair journey so I wanted to have somewhere I can track my progress and this is it.

A little about me.

I was born and raised on a sunny little island called little Nassau, in New Providence, Bahamas. I was the 6th of 9 precious children. Imagine this lot around a dinner table! Ha ha! I had a wonderful childhood and did what most little girls did in the Bahamas including climbed trees, shoot marbles, played ring-play and hop-scotch, ran around happily barefooted in dirt, had exciting imaginary friends, believed hopelessly in Santa...until the rude awakening, went to church twice, sometimes three times on Sundays plus on Saturday nights for choir practice.

I hated going through this ritual week in and week out but WOW! When it was time for the christmas play at the end of the year, I always wanted to be in the spotlight - because I could sing as a child. (now, I need voice lessons to serenade my audience). Anyway, I digress.

I have now blossomed into a mature young woman. I have pursued so many talents including 3 years at our hotel college as a certified chef (although I don't do a lot of cooking now as that was nearly 20 years ago. Yikes!! Did I say 20 years ago? My how time flies when you're growing younger. Anyway, I am no longer a culinarian but a nail technician which I absolutely love doing.

Now come with me, buckle up your seat belts and brace yourselves because of the many rolling hills up ahead - it's gonna be a heck of a ride, lol.

November 29, 2007 - The Beginning

I co-wash once per week now but intend to increase that to 2 times per week only during my relaxer stretches. My hair is demanding more attention from me and I decided to throw my hands up in surrender to it - for now.

I am definately getting into this deep conditioning on dry hair once every two weeks as well. This works way better than it sounds.

(I am the typical product junkie and I have a multitude of products that I am trying out to see which ones my hair really like and I'll work through them untill I am down to my staple products.) Hmmm, this is easier said than done.

I pre-poo for an hour or two with any of my left over conditioners that I am trying to use up, mixed with a little natural oil of jojoba, sweet almond, organic virgin coconut oil, castor oil, extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil. I put a shower cap on over this and do my house chores.

I have a host of protein and conditioning shampoos which I use based on how my hair feels mostly. I clarify once a month to a month and a half depending on if I co-washed too often or if I have too much build-up on my hair and scalp from daily moisturizing.

I usually use a moisturizing shampoo once per week and a protein shampoo once every two weeks. I like to dilute my shampoos by mixing them with a little water before putting them on my scalp especially my poos with sulfates in them.

I would do a mild protein treatment (my favorite is Aphogee 2 minute keratin reconstructor although Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor is slowly winning first place) once a week. Every 8 to 10 weeks I would do a hardcore aphogee treatment - my hair usually needs one of these by this time and the one that I will be using is Dudley's DRC 28 Protein and Fortifying Treatment.

I deep condition once per week followed by a protein treatment, they're really great during my relaxer stretches when I'm at least 8 weeks post relaxer and beyond. This helps to tame my roots extremely well.

I now incorporate some ayurveda hair products in my regimen because of their strengthening and conditioning power. I love ayurveda powders, henna and oils. I do use ayurveda products at least once a week to 10 days whether in the form of a co-wash, a rinse or a henna treatment (See my recipe corner for more info).
