The purpose of my fotki is to journal the progress and growth of my hair. I really wish I had started this fotki during the transitioning days that led to me chopping it all to a teeny weeny afro......so you guys can really see how jacked up my hair was back then. But even with whatever progress I have experienced so far, I consider myself a hair newbie, and I am fully aware that I STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.

HAIR BIO:

I'm married with two beautiful daughters. I am a stay-at-home-mom right now, but I am an attorney by trade, hence the name LadyEsquire.

In my childhood, I had lots of shrinkage, but my hair was at a decent length when my mom hot combed it. It was medium length (some where near my collarbone). Now, that I am entering another decade, my goal is to return to my healthier roots and grow longer, flowing tresses, with loose beautiful curls.

THIS IS MY HAIR JOURNEY:

I have an embarrassing hair history. My mother, a cosmetologist, owned and operated beauty shops. So, I practically grew up in her salon. With that said, one would assume that I have the healthiest and longest hair. NOT!! Perhaps in high school it was healthy, when I used to get my hair done regularly. But my mom was more concerned about the hairstyle and so much about the health. As long as it was shiny and looked good, most stylists are trained to focus on the finished product.

All three of my sisters have hair down their mid-backs. Even though my mom is a beautician, my sisters are all opposed to getting their hair done by stylists. Even the sister who is a cosmetologist herself…she washes religiously and does her own hair. And even when they do go to a stylist, they would all get a Dominican doobie (Brooklyn term which means: roller set and blowout).

This is where the demise of my hair started:

In anticipation for the first day of 9th grade, one of my mom’s assistants gave me a really bad haircut. My mom saved the day by shaping it up into a fierce Halle Berry hairdo. I was too cute for words and had the boys going wild!! From there, I developed an unhealthy attachment to curling irons and gel. Even when my mom noticed my harmful habits and attempted to convince me to do more doobie sets and less blowouts, I insisted otherwise, because I was hooked. The regular washes and treatments controlled my addiction.

However (thum-ta-thum-thum-thummmm), in my early 20s, I started experimenting with weaves. At first, I only wore weaves on days where I had a special event to attend and I would simply add one or two tracks in, for fullness. But the weave became a crutch. I washed less frequently, used heated appliances more often, and was addicted to hair gel.

The only time I did not abuse my hair was when I was pregnant with my first daughter. I wore braids and left my hair alone. I did see progress in volume and growth. But I went back to my same old tricks, after giving birth. The abuse persisted until I got pregnant with my second daughter. Again, I left my hair alone and it grew. I remember the day before my first day of law school, while I was 9 months pregnant, I went and got a Dominican blowout. My hair was the fullest and the longest it had been since my childhood, primarily because I had not messed with it during the entire pregnancy. It was on my neck and curled in a cute bob.

But all throughout my first year in grad school, I wore it in phony ponytail, with a heap of gel. Then during my last year, when I started planning for interviews for my first job after graduation, I realized that I was going to be an attorney with some jacked up hair and clear edges. My edges had gotten so bad; I had to purchase a mascara-type dye, made specifically to fill in clear edges. I was even contemplating calling those hair specialists who advertise on infomercials. I WAS DESPERATE.

Because my sister wore protective styles during the winter, she offered to braid mine for me as well, to give it an overdue BREAK. I decided not to relax my hair for a one-year period. I wore braids for 3 weeks at a time, and did that from February thru May 2005. Then my sister moved to another state. Besides, I was getting sick of the braids, anyway.

So I started wearing a wig, with my hair corn-rowed and covered with a plastic cap underneath the wig. I wore wigs from May 05 thru Feb 06, but during that time, I gradually chopped off all of my relaxed hair, in order to be completely natural. At one point, I had about an inch of hair. I was sporting a teeny weeny afro!!! During this “natural” stage, I found great info from www.MotownGirl.com. I also purchased the book, “Healthier Hair in Six Weeks,” by Caroline Gray because she relaxed and had healthy long hair.

On February 28, 2006, after one year of being relaxer-free, I finally relaxed it.

From March thru May 06, I stretched my relaxer for 11 weeks. I went to a beautician but it was a bit underprocessed. After the second 12-week stretch, I relaxed it myself ...thanks to the Self-Relaxing thread, on BBBH which was very helpful. Thanks, SistaSlick. And I have been growing ever since.

RELAXERS AND PROGRESS:

1) February 2006, (1st nappiversary) - hair was on my neck when wet.

2) May 2006 – hair was right above my collarbone when wet.

3) July, 2006 – hair was below my shoulders when wet.

My goal for the next six months is Arm Pit Length hair.
