Hello Natural Beauties,

I must admitt that I started my natural journey almost by accident. I had always wore my hair in cute, short, relaxed styles that required a ton of maintenance and $$$ to keep that way. I had worn my hair in short styles since middle school mainly because I did not think my hair would grow. I was just trying to "work with what I had" thinking I was making the best out of what God gave me: black hair that simply did not grow. This was especially true in the nape/back area of my head which brings to mind a popular verse from Project Pat's "Chicken Head" song:

"Bald head scalley wag ain't got no hair in the back!" Lol!!

I was 100% sold on the theory that black (4a/4b) hair did not grow long and that the best I could do is look to braids, weaves, and extensions to obtain length . . . .boy was I WRONG!!
One fatefull day back in December 07' I said enough is enough!! The back of my hair had been ravaged by my last relaxer. I had scabs, bald spots and a plethora of split-ends and breakage. That day I had an epiphany-a revelation of sorts: it was the relaxer, the neglect, and the overprocessing of my hair that was stunting the growth!!
To my computer and the internet I ran. I was determined to get some helpful information about growing, maintaing, and caring for beautiful black hair. Needless to say I stumbled upon GrowAfroHairLong, Nappturality, Fotki and other sites full of women of color who were not only dispelling the horrible belief that black hair (4a/4b) doesn't grow long, but they were doing it NATURALLY!!!
Now that I am transitioning I am beginning to see growth that I could have never imagined or realized when I was a permie. I have hair in the nape/back of my head and it's flourishing wonderfully!! Now I am asking that you please support me thru BC and beyond. It is growing so well that I am reluctant to cut off the relaxed ends but I know that this will be a vital step in me completing my transformation to a full head of healthy hair!!

ETA: I did the infamous Big Chop on 1-10-09 and I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life! There was a little heat damage from constant pressing during the transition phase when I just didn't know what to do with my hair. Needless to say I had to cut a few more inches off than I had originally planned, and will probably have to cut more in a few months. I will not be pressing or applying any heat for a long time; I'm just taking everything in stride during this wonderful journey.
