My name is Tomika
And I am a Fotki addict.
For a long time, I thought people that would dare walk out of their homes with a "natural" hairstyle were brave rebellious individuals. I did not understand the beauty the lied in curls, coils, and naps. I was brought up in a home where "straight" hair was good hair and anything that wasn't, was considered "nappy". My mother started my sister and I with relaxers when I was in the 4th grade. Personally, I never noticed much of a difference between the before and after the relaxers, it still hurt when my mother combed my hair.
Cream of Nature, African Pride, Optimum, and many relaxers over the years caused my hair to shed terribly and after a certain point, my hair stopped growing. Everyday, after I had styled my hair, there would be piles damaged hair all over the sink and floor. It scared me and I knew if I didn't do something soon, it was going to get progressively worse.
In 2004, I cut a considerable amount of my hair off, wanting to try a shorter style, not interested in going natural at that point. I did notice that my hair grew back thicker, but because my hair was shorter, I relaxed more frequently, and eventually, my hair suffered.
In September of 2007, once again, I cut a lot of my hair off, still wanting a shorter hairstyle. By that time however, I had been introduced to many natural hair care forms as well as this site and began educating myself on proper hair care and natural hair care. I have many ladies to thank that really inspired me to stop procrastinating and just go for it:

I am currently in Long Beach, CA. and I have been here since the beginning of November, 2007. If there are any natural young ladies nearby who could offer words of wisdom, suggestions, please contact me :)
I am really trying to educate myself on products that will be good for my hair and products that won't be so good, varying from hair gels, to moisturizers, to conditioners, to deep conditioners with protein. I'd like to create a regiment of my own. If you should have a suggestion on which products have worked the best for you, please leave the name of those products in my guest book.
