I started my natural 'journey' February 2008 by cutting all my relaxed hair off. I became a member of nappturality.com after researching how to care for natural hair and I was motivated to go for it. What prompted me to start on this journey in the first place?
For starters, I was a part of a R.I.F. (reduction in force) in October 2007. I didn't receive any notice and was handed a letter saying that effective 'immediately' I was no longer employed. I had been through a layoff before and I knew things were going to be tight.
So I started thinking of what I could trim from my budget to make ends meet until I found work again. After all it took me nearly 2 years to find work the last time I was RIF'd.
The very first thing I thought of was my weekly trips to the salon. Every black woman knows about the Saturday morning ritual at the beauty salon. I had wasted hours of my life in beauty salons. I was sick and tired of leaving my kids at the crack of dawn to get my hair, fried, dyed, and layed to the side, only to emerge with scalp burns from the chemicals and a hair style that only lasted a few days. I spent way too much money for that!
I had considered going natural in the past and I felt like now was my chance. What did I have to lose? I told my stylist that I wanted to go natural before and she always talked me out of it. With comments like, "WE all think about that from time to time, and then WE get over it."
But this time when I told her I was going natural, she could see in my eyes that I truly meant it. After all, she had been doing my hair for more than ten years. I felt it was appropriate that she be the person to send me on my way.
About 2 months after my last relaxer I was done wearing my hair in a ponytail everyday. I wanted to cut it all off, NOW! I consulted a natural hairstylist and she told me that I didn't have enough of the new 'chemical free' hair to warrant cutting it. Otherwise, she would have to shave me bald. I'm bold, but not that bold.
I waited some more. I went to visit my old stylist again. I thought to myself, she knows my hair better than I do right? Well she told me to wait also. So I waited some more. Finally I called her in February 2008 and said, "If you don't cut my hair today, then I'm going to do it." I was told to come in the following morning.
That was the best decision I ever made for my hair. I'll admit at first, I didn't get it. I poured over countless websites like fotki and nappturality. Time and time again I read journey. I rolled my eyes and thought that these women were way too melodramatic. I mean, it's just hair, right? What could possibly be so enlightening about this experience?
Well let's say I'm eating crow now because I truly get it. I never expected to feel so transformed and renewed in my spirit. I feel like my mind is clear and I've found my true self. I float around like I'm 'the bee's knees.' Other people see it too.
I get compliments all the time about my hair. But normally it's comments about how beautiful I am. Now I'm not the best looking thing in the world and I'm not the worst thing; but I know it's because of my new found naturalness. It makes me glow, much like when I was pregnant with my first born.
I was over the moon when I was pregnant for the first time and I glowed from the inside out. Yes, I just compared my hair to the glow of pregnancy. You read that right.
It's also much like falling in love for the first time. The grass is greener, the air is sweet, and all is right with the world. I'm in love with the fact that I can get my hair wet anytime and not bat an eyelash. I have kinks, coils, and curls that fill me with joy at the slightest touch or glance.
Although I've gained a few pounds since having my kids, I don't feel frumpy and lumpy like I did before. Even one of the female parents at my kids' school said the chemical hair must have been weighing me down because she never saw me smile so much.
My ambition has returned, too. I'm no longer interested in working a job. I want to pursue my dream. I owe it all to being natural. Before February of 2008 I hadn't seen my natural hair since about 5 years old. So for me that's about 25 years ago.
If you are a woman with kinky, coily, highly textured hair, and you are considering breaking away from the chemicals, DO IT NOW! You don't have to cut your hair down to less than an inch. You don't have to become a member of any natural hair websites. (they do help though) But if your eyes roll, and you glaze over the word journey on some random hair site about naturals; stop. One day you will get it too.
