I am not one of those ladies who begged my mom to give me a relaxer only to regret it later. I think I got my first relaxer when I was 5. So that was long before I could make any decisions or requests for my hair. I always remember being in the chair in the kitchen while the hot comb was heating on the stove. I HATED getting my hair curled,pressed, and relaxed. I often got a ding with a comb in the back of the head for my 'fake' complaints.

At any rate...by the time I was in middle school I was conditioned to think a relaxer was necessary. When my hair fell out the summer before I started 9th grade I was mortified. (somebody forgot to apply the neutralizer) So I actually had my first TWA way back when and I was very unhappy about it. I don't think I smiled my entire 9th grade year and folks thought I was 'the mean girl.' I believed I was REALLY REALLY UGLY. Not to mention I had acne too.(oh teenager problems) LOL!

I was overjoyed when I had grown enough healthy hair to get another relaxer by the 10th grade. (crazy right?) I thought it would make me pretty again.

Everything was 'status quo' until I discovered the 'Halle' cut and never looked back. That was my look and everywhere I went folks told me how good I looked with short hair. Finally I grew tired of the 'Halle' and decided I would grow my hair out for my wedding in 2001. That was the first and last time I reached APL.(armpit length) I B.C.'d down to a fade after I got married in 2001 and wore a texturized fade until about 2006. At which time I grew my hair out to shoulder length again.

The decision to go natural wasn't a spiritual thing actually. I got laid off for the 2nd time in my adult life October 2007, and immediately decided I could do without the trips to the salon every week. All of my relaxed life I had chemical burns and they were getting worse and worse. One of the last chemical burns I had made me think my scalp might not recover. That really scared me. I also had serious dandruff issues.

I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. So I wore my hair in a ponytail for 3 months and was turned away while I begged my regular stylist and one natural stylist to do my B.C. It seemed like they kept telling me to wait for more new growth. I was determined to have a professional B.C. to send me on my way. My regular stylist was the one to do the deed. After all,she was the one doing my 'Halle' all those years. My B.C. was another one of her masterpieces and that's my hairstory.

I'm happy to report my dandruff is a thing of the past. I don't miss the relaxer one bit. It's wasn't RELAXING AT ALL!!
