This site is dedicated to my curly girl hair journey. Feel free to watch my progress and share any of your findings/progress with me! I would especially love to hear from other natural heads.

100% natural, I've never relaxed or gotten my hair permed. But as a youngin' I blow-fried my hair all the time and flat-ironed it several times over. It got extremely unhealthy and now I'm throwing out the blow-"fryer" and getting used to my natural texture. Currently it's pretty healthy (no excessive breakage), I'm not used to seeing lots of hair in a hair brush/comb anymore(because I don't use one!). I would love all black women to become natural and enjoy their texture. Hopefully I can inspire at least one person to do that one day :)

I'm trying to keep my routine simple so it's not anonying to do 1000 different steps everyday.

I've just bought the Curly Girl book for needs of african american and naturally curly hair. I have adoped the no-poo routine and will no longer be shampooing every 3 days, even though I had a gentle cleansing shampoo.

I am continuing to condition everyday. My hair can't go one day with just a water-wash. I use the curl quenching conditioner by blended beauty to thorougly moisturize and cleanse my scalp:

To co-wash I first bend my head back and allow the water to cascade through my hair like a waterfall. I move my head slighty from side to side to allow the water to smooth and flow freely through my hair. Then I use a good amount of conditioner, rub it between my fingers and massage my scalp working from the sides to the crown to the back. I continue to do this and turn around and lean forward as well while I finger comb. I continue to finger comb leaning forward until I get out of all the tangles, this takes a little more time than using a wide-toothed comb (which I may use occasionally, depending on time). I part my hair into 4 sections and detangle each section with my fingers until I can run my fingers through most of my hair. I turn the water to cold and allow my hair to rinse under the water for about 3-5 seconds. While my head is still bent I grab a hand towel, lower my hair into it and then plop it on top of my head. When I get out I take the towel off, my hair usually isn't dripping wet by then... and lightly coat a moisturizer in my hair by rubbing my hands together and smoothing it back into my hair, which hopefully has lots of slip. I add oil/moisturizer (moisturizer first) and don't touch my hair for at least an hour. This is extremely imporant, esp if you are prone to frizzy hair. I used to mess around with my curls trying to shape them better only to realize I was just causing them to frizz out. I may finger coil if there are strands of hair I'd like to be curlier.

Styling- I'm trying to stay away from buns, if I do bun it's usually a loose one. I may also do 2 puffs. At times I take a head scarf and just tie it around my head. I may try the lift and separate techniques to add lift to the roots at the front of my hair, which are usually very flat and immobile. But I mostly try to do as little manipulation as possible.

Important things I try to avoid:

HEAT! (This is obvious ;))

Over-combing (I don't touch brushes!) I will usually finger comb when my hair is straight very gently because I am quite prone to tangles.

Sleeping on a pillow without a satin cover, that's just a big no-no for me. I know how rough a sleeper I am...

I put my hair in a high ponytail a lot if it is straight so it won't do much rubbing against harsh fabrics, I'm not too stingy about that though.

Things I try to incorporate:

Very, very gentle handling, I pretend as if it is a fine piece of silk I must preserve.

Finger-combing.

I'm gonna try scalp massages for a bit before I go to sleep. Apparently they are very relaxing.

Vitamins, because I am a veggie it's important I take mine everyday and drink lots of enriched soy milk.
