Born in Aba in Abia State, Nigeria, I came to the United States with a full, thick, long head of hair because getting relaxers was not a big thing in Nigeria. Protective styles were done, not because of their functionality, but because of the convenience and culture. When we moved to the US, my aunt, our primary baby sitter, overwhelmed with the amount of hair that 5 girls had (yes, I have 4 sisters), she permed our hair and things went downhill.

I started feeling like it was a necessity and my hair would be "knappy" without it. The mentality stuck. Loyally, every 6 weeks, I would relax my hair and when I went to college, it got even worse. In 2006, my senior year at Texas A&M, I ran across some younger pictures when my hair was longer and I was shocked when I compared them to what I had. My strands had a meeting and decided that since I was mistreating them, they would retreat from my head. I then decided to do the total opposite of what I had been doing, because after all, what could I lose? More hair? No, it could ONLY improve. So I had to make changes, including cutting out the perms, reducing my heat usage, buying great products, and THROWING AWAY THAT CHEAP GOLD 'N HOT flat iron. I've been doing cuts here and there to totally eliminate the remaining straight ends and when they're all gone, I'll focus on length.

I did not do a BC because I was not ready, but in the Summer of 2008, I completely rid myself of all the relaxed ends. I'm growing my hair for health foremost, then length. Although natural, I don't wear my hair in an afro, mainly because my hair type doesn't grow out like that and I don't think it means you have to either. Cutting out the harsh chemical treatments (or at least drastically reducing the frequency for some) can do so much for your hair, I'm living proof.

I hope you guys enjoy my pictures, as I have enjoyed looking at so many inspirational fotkis, and I hope if anything, mine helps serve as an inspiration to all the ladies out there looking for advice/tips on how to grow their hair. Good luck my black women!
