Phatgrlslym-Healthy hair is good hair...

I recently decided to go natural and to document my journey.
Why, You may ask did I make this decision? Well, because I feel I need a change, a little out of curiosity and because I want to embrace who I am completely. Sorry to disappoint, but I don't really have any relaxer horror stories. But my hair has had its fair share of ups and downs. We all have had those "what was I thinking with that style" moments. And its nice to be able to look back and laugh. Whenever I see a Black Woman walking down the street with the hair that God blessed her with, it fills me with pride and inspired me to want to take the leap. I know some may say "its only hair" but for me its an extension of my style and individuality and it says a lot about who you are and how you feel, physically and emotionally. I'm tired of punishing my hair, ironing it, wrapping it, binding it, frying it, and poisoning it. My hair has always been good to me, why should I treat it so? My hair deserves a chance to be free and express its true essence and nature and I feel this will bring about a new level of freedom in my life that I am ready to embrace.

Hair routine update 3/10/09

For the past 3months I have been wearing my hair in mainly twists or twist outs, I also keep my head covered when I go outside.I find this keeps my hair moisturized and soft.

I wash and de-tangle my hair every 1-2 weeks.

To de-tangle I use just water in a spritz bottle with rosemary and peppermint oils. Ive been trying to minimize using any tools other than my fingers to comb.

To wash it I use African black soap, deep condition with Taliah Wajjid black earth conditioner, then I use coconut oil and shea butter on my damp hair to twist and lock in moisture. During the week, I spritz my hair daily with either my rosemary and peppermint oil water or the Taliah Wajjid Bodifying Mist, then I seal with coconut oil or shea butter.

I discovered two things(well, its a discovery for me, I'm sure many of you may already know)

1. My hair loves coconut oil. When I first used it in the beginning of my journey, I didn't feel like it did anything for my hair, but I learned the trick to it for me, is to use it with a water based spritz.

2. Those wide toothed combs in the beauty supplies stores are no good. Combs with seams cause breakage and split ends, now I either finger comb or use the denman brush to de-tangle every 1-2 weeks, other wise I don't comb my hair at all, I just fluff and go.

I noticed ALOT less little pieces on the floor and my hair is retaining length.
