S-S-G2005: Taking a long break!

Hey everybody. In May of '07, I decided to begin a new chapter in my life by deciding to go natural with my hair. It all started when a close friend of mine convinced me to go natural for all the right reasons. I've researched it and I must say I am in love with the idea of being a natural, young woman of color. I think its beautiful that there are women of color out there who embrace their natural hair the way God intended.

My last perm was on May 16 2007. I transitioned for 8 months instead of doing the BC right off the back. My transition styles included braids, sew-ins, twists, and curls. I've updated my pictures so enjoy and feel free to leave comments, ask questions, and sign my guest book!!!

How long have you had natural hair?
Response: As of January 9, 2008 I've been perm free! :0 D

How was your hair styled before you grew your hair naturally?
Response: I've had just about every perm hair style out there-wraps,straw sets, sew-ins, twists, buns, etc.

How long was your hair before you grew it naturally?
Response: My hair was just below the nape of my neck.

How long is your hair now?
Response: Its almost three inches long.

Why did you decide to grow your hair naturally?
Response: After being convinced by a natural friend to take the big leap, I began doing research about it and decided to do it. There are alot of benefits to natural hair which was a big factor in my decision to go natural.

Before you grew your hair naturally, how did you transition (i.e. cold turkey, braids, growing it out...)? Why did you choose this method?
Response: I transitioned using braids mostly and some two strand twists styles with my own hair; I chose this way because I was still a bit nervous about the end result, mostly how I would look with short hair after doin the BC!

Describe your hair texture: I have that thick tight true afro texture! lol I don't no if this is the real texture but right now it is SO DRY!!!

Who maintains your natural hair (you or a stylist)?
Response: It hasn't been a month yet so now I'm learning about my hair and different products to use.

What problems with your hair have you encountered in the workplace/social settings?
Response: Well right now I'm unemployed, but we will see how things work out.

What's the worst natural hair stereotype?
Response: Hhmmmm...it would have to be that natural hair is nappy. I too thought the same thing during my perm days when I would go too long without a perm, but I've come to realize that its so soft and most importantly HEALTHY!!!

What do you love most about your hair?
Response: I love starting over getting to know my hair and all the healthy products I can buy AND make for my hair!

What bothers you most about your hair?
Response: Right now I hate how DRY it is!!!

Have you ever colored your natural hair?
Response: Not yet, but I CAN'T wait to put some color in my hair!!!

If you could start going natural all over again, what would you do differently?
Response: Hhmmm...I would probably take all preventitive measures to keep my hair as moisturized as possible because natural hair HAS to be moisturized 24/7!!!

What has having natural hair taught you about yourself/others?
Response: I'm beginning to appreciate all the natural elements of the world such as natural stuff to put in my hair as welll as on and in my body. I've even began researching vegetarianism.

What's your advice to those interested in growing natural hair?
Response: DO IT!!! lol I was once a "white crack" addict and was faithfully on my stylist schedule! But it gives u a sense of accomplishment when you have completed the process only to discover that its SOOO worth it.

Response:....brainwashing! Its like we're brain washed that African Americans HAVE to get a perm in order to maintain our hair and be acceptable in today's society!!!

Response:GORGEOUS!!! Many years down the line I will have some.

Complete this thought, Weaves and hair extensions are...
Response:....temporary, but little did I know you can create these same styles with healthier natural hair!

What are some of your favorite ways to wear your natural hair?
Response: Since I'm just starting out and my hair can't get into a ponytail I like wearing twist and braid outs with headbands.

What's "bad" hair?
Response: Bad hair is hair that involves the use of chemicals that permanently change the interior of our hair. Almost like a drug working from the inside out!

If your hair had a name and a personality, what's its name and describe its personality.
Response: "Hi. My name is Super Thick. My name describes my personality. I'm super thick but extremely healthy. That's because I don't wear any man made items. I love water and love to smell good with natural oils. Right now I'm a lil on the dry side, but I'm workin on it!"
