So here is my story.

I grew up in Ghana and went to school there until I was eight. During most of that time, my hair was natural and thick and just generally awesome. In Ghanaian schools, they do not allow you to relax your hair and you actually have to cut it for high school. Anyways, I always wanted to relax my hair and right before my family relocated to the US, my mom let us- my sis and I- secretely relax our hair. I had relaxed hair until last yr (Summer 2006). During these times, I fluctuated btwn nice healthy hair and really bad hair. The hair never really grew past a certain length either.
Then, I went to a predominantly white boarding high school in New Hampshire and my hair def. suffered. I tried to fit in by washing my hair everyday and not doing anything with it- a big no no!

Finally, college came around and I decided to go Southern California! My school's campus was beautiful, but the water and the air was extremely hard and dry. My hair started beaking off in clumps. You should have seen my floor after I combed my hair. I also took an Intro to Black Studies, which helped to start thinking about all the politics associated with black hair. After a very frustrating hair year, I decided to go natural. I discovered Nappturality.com, which gave me that extra push. I started to transition and told my mom, who thought I was depressed/going crazy. I finally BC'd sometime in July while I was in Ghana.

My reactions?
From my extended family...Why would you wanna cut your beautiful straight hair off.

I'm happy to say none of these ppl phased me. My sis and my dad loved my super short hair...my mom also came around to it. Now that my hair is growing, Im getting more and more positive reactions. My bf is still coming around.

So I just joined and I hope to chronicle continuous hair growth and new hair discoveries. Im excited and have already been inspired by various ppl's albums and product/style tips.

PS- Many ppl think that because your are african, you will embrace natural hair/being natural in general. THIS IS NOT TRUE! Sooo many woman relax their hair, wear straight weaves, and even bleach their skin! You have to remember that the impact of slavery, and colonialism was not only on the Americas. In many ways, the desire to be whiter is greater over there...or atleast in Ghana. I can not speak for all of Africa.
