Hello all of my natural sistas!! My name is D~Lo and I'm here to share my trials and errors of natural hair, as well as learn from others, and see what ideas others have. Well, like many natural women, I started out natural as a child and would get my hair pressed often. I had such beautiful, long think hair then, probably as healthy as it gets, (or pretty close). Eventually, my mom gave into the whold relaxer idea, I must have been in or around 5th grade when I got my first relaxer. So there I was slowly but surely, unknowingly damaging all of my beautiful hair. it didn't take long for me to learn how to do it, and not too long from then I started relaxing my hair as well. I'm sure there was alot of overprocessing and overlapping on relaxed hair. Not to mention I was probably doing my relaxers too close together. My hair started to get shorter and shorter, thinner and thinner. My hairstyles didn't help. I had descovered the curling iron, and gel, weave, and twisties... This wasn't good. I did my twisties too tight, my weave ponytails (i know you remember those) wayyy to tight, and I'd put so much gel and spritz in my hair not knowing you need to wash it out and not comb it out. again, shorter and shorter, thinner and thinner!!
Then in 8th grade, I decided that I wanted t have blond highlights... And I wanted them soo bad that I decided to do them myself with an at home self high light kit... bad idea.... I put wayyyy to many in, and I left it on too long, and on top of all that, I didn't know how to take care of my hair yet. I mean, I thought moisturizing meant oiling and greasing your scalp... So to make a long story short my hair was fried... It looked so frizzy and raggedy, there was nothing I could do to it. About a year later after a few trims and wraps it started to look better, but not it's best.
Then I started reading Sophisticates Black Hair Magazine, and began to learn a little bit about hair. I began wearing my hair in braids and conditioning it, and going to the hair salon every now and then. My hair started trying to regain its length again in high school. It was certainly more healthy. Although I was still using relazers to straighten my hair.
Then my senior year right before graduation I decided I wanted to cut my hair short and add red highlights, which wasnt a problem until I decided to get a relaxer. Now granted I did wait the amount of time they ask you to wait in between colors and relaxers. However, I suffered major breakage. My whole fringe area broke off to about a half an inch. I had to pull alll this hair from the center of my head to make a bang, it was horrible!!!! So, needless to say when it was long enough in the fringe, I went back to my oh so faithful braids. By tha fall my hair was back past my shoulders.
The last stand: In April the next year, I decided I was tired of the highlights and wanted a solid color. I wanted to dye my hair a deep chestnut brown, and I was so excited about it. So I got my color done, and I must say I ws sooo in love with it!! I also needed a perm, but I knew what happened the last time, so I decided that I would wait a month before I'd get a touch up!! Needless to say, after the month, and that relaxer, sooomuch of the back of my hair broke off!!!! I decided I was done. I liked the options I had with coloring my hair, but I could opt for another straightening method. I decided that April that I would no longer get relaxers and that if I wanted to straighten my har, I would use a flat iron.
That fall, I was looking up how to take care of unrelaxed hair when I stumbled across napturality.com!!! I saw soo many pictures of lady's beautiful and healthy hair, and I thought to myself, 'why couldn't my hair be like that?!?' So I began doing research and was just in awe of what I was finding. I seen that most of the ladies had profiles on fotki, and it displayed their hair chronicles... Thats how I got here now, a little more educted on how to treat my hair, what products I should and shouldn't use, and more. I've also enrolled in cosmetology school so I could take my hair knowledge further and share it with all those who want to know how to have healthy hair!! So thanks ladies of fotki, and my natural sistas!!!
