- This album chronicles the return of my hair to its natural glory.
My last relaxer was on February 9th 2004 and I did the “Big Chop” on September 9th 2004, thus I transitioned for seven months. I did a second big chop for scab hair on April 21st 2005.
I decided to go natural while at grad school in London. The difference in climate really weakened my hair and I wore weaves and braids most of the time in an attempt to curb breakage. I was fed up of spending so much money on treatments for my hair, just to keep it from falling off my head! I knew that I needed to do something about my hair and I didn’t want to keep relaxing. Then a friend introduced me to www.nappturality.com and the knowledge and skills I learnt from that site strengthened my desire to go natural.
It was not the first time that I had grown out my relaxer (I had also done so during my teens but soon relaxed again) However, I think it was the first time that I had done so much research into the correct way to deal with my hair in its natural state. For the first time I realise how many lies I had been fed about natural hair, whether deliberately or by persons who didn’t mean any harm but really didn’t know better.
I understand now that natural hair doesn’t have to be difficult to handle if you have the necessary knowledge, skills and tools and if you have the right attitude towards your hair. I realise that I can be creative and express myself with my natural hair and it doesn’t have to be boring. For the first time I understand that I don’t have to straighten my hair to “look professional”. I don’t have to alter my hair to be beautiful … what God gave me is just fine.
There are many persons who may go through this album who may have made the choice to wear their hair straightened or chemically altered in some way; you have made your choice I have made mine – to each his/her own.
