I have made the decision to transition. Ive become so bored with having long, straight hair that I want to get back in touch with my natural hair. My parents never wanted me to get a relaxer in the first place but I ended up getting one anyway in the 8th grade. After almost seven years I understand why and I am giving up the creamy crack! Since I've had long hair all my life, I plan on transitioning for about two years so that I have a good amount of length. I will post pictures as soon as i have the time :o)

UPDATE 1/3/08: So I know that I have MIA these past few months. I've just been busy between school, work and the holiday. I have been taking pictures this entire time, its just the they are on the bf's computer and it is not working :o(.
~In other news I cut 3 inches off in May 07, and it pretty much all grew back by Nov 07, but since I am obsessed with blunt ends I cut another 2 inches off... and I'm itching to cut it again. Right now my hair is BSL.
~Great news in my life is that I am studying abroad next semester *drumroll* ....in Costa Rica! I will leave in the next 2 weeks and I will be back the end of June. The bad news is that I won't be able to update my fotki while overseas :o(. However I will try to post pics before I leave. Any tips on what products would help in the heat is appreciated.
~Transitioning has been great so far, not difficult really because I am used to dealing with my thick hair. I have about 5-5.5 inches of newgrowth. I recently bought Qhemet's Amla and Olive Heavy Cream and it is great for my NG. Since I'll be away for 5 months, you can imagine how much NG I will have when I return. Wish me luck ladies!

So I have been asked the question why did I relaxed my hair in the first place by a TON of people, and to be honest I ask myself that question as well. I am a year into my transition and I thought it would be a terrible experience, but I find that the more NG I have makes it so much easier to style (right now I have about 6.5 inches). I absolutely hated flat ironing my hair when I was fully relaxed because it was such a long process. It didnt take a long time because I dont know how to use a flat iron (im actually a pro with the flat iron lol), rather my hair is just so thick it took at least 2 hrs. Since I was little every single person who has ever styled my hair always commented on how thick my hair was (they never said it in a bad way, more like "how can this little girl have so much hair on her head") and I still get that reaction to this day. When I was 12 my mom pretty much told me I had to start washing and styling my own hair and it was DAUNTING. After my sister got her first perm for her Jr High prom of course I wanted one too because I saw how easy it was for her to comb and wash. So I took the plunge and while on vacation in Belize I went to my mom's old hairdresser and relaxed my hair bone straight. I basically mimicked my mom's hair care habits (DCing and combing while wet & loaded with conditioner, leave-conditioner, regular trims) & managed to maintain the health and length of my hair all these years. I remember telling my friends in High School that I didnt get a relaxer because I wanted straight hair, I just wanted manageability (of course they didnt believe me). I told myself in the 9th grade that I would grow out my relaxer in college and here I am. It just made sense to grow it out because I only got relaxers 3-4 times a year plus I almost always wore my hair in a bun and straightened only for parties and formal occasions. Even now when I straighten my hair it takes the same amount of time to prep and straighten. Ive basically been wasting my money applying relaxers. My mom has always been natural and she ALWAYS told me and my sister "hair is just hair, it will always grow back". She also taught us to never be vain, to appreciate and be happy with what God gave us (that included eyes, ears, skin, hair, everything). I hope that one day I too can be a great example of a natural, self-embracing black woman when I have daughters .
