- It's update time. Some of the info was a bit outdated. I've been natural since March 1996. There wasn't a lot of information around at that time, so I just winged it. I had a long transition (just over a year), but had the relaxed ends cut when some of them started to break off at the line of demarcation. I retain my length by going the low manipulation route, it's primarily kept in twists. They're just so versatile. However, I do rock more styles (mostly in the warmer months).
I don't really have a routine per se, but this is what I do:
1. I usually retwist every other week, so that's twice a month. Depending on what I've been doing in the meantime, sometimes they can get real rough looking but I don't care ;)
2. Normally I twist on damp hair right after I wash it. Also, I wash my hair with the twists in. I have a friend that combs hers out before she washes, but that would take me forever! The only time I use a comb is if I want a straight part. The comb is NOT my friend; finger-combing is the best method for me. Depending on how many and how big I make my twists, it takes about 3 hours. I've gotten really lazy over the years, so I don't put the smaller ones in anymore. No more five hour hair sessions.
3. In the past I used olive oil. I would put it on immediately after I washed my hair before I twisted. The ends tend to be a bit drier, so I'd keep the oil handy. If I didn't have olive oil, I would use unrefined shea butter. For the past few months I've been using Asha's sunkissed pomade followed by a coating of Aveda's beautifying oil. The pomade moisturizes the hair and the oil seals the deal. Luckily, my hair doesn't get too dry. By the time it does, it's time to rewash, so it's not crucial that I use anything in the interim. But, I will break out the water bottle and spritz it to death if need be.
4. Speaking of washing, I was using the inexpensive Suave line. Either the coconut or their humectress formulas. I used the coconut shampoo and conditioner when I had relaxed hair and never switched over. I have tried Pantene's line for curly hair, but I can't tell a difference. I do wanna try the Organix line one day though. Currently, I'm using Nasabb black soap as my shampoo.
