 | My hair journey:
I first decided to relax my hair around age 14. My hair stayed around shoulder length for a few years, and then I chopped it down to about 2 inches. It grew very quickly, and so I wore it in a variety of styles, often choosing to rollerset it. It did reach near waist-length, but all it took was a careless hairdresser to comb the relaxer from root to tip (something he had NEVER done before in the two years or so I had been going to him bi-weekly), and my hair broke off. I have always hated being 'at the mercy' of hairdressers--even some of the so-called 'religious' ones will ruin your hair out of jealousy or spite.
When I grew my hair long again (around bra-strap), I basically shampooed, conditioned, blow-dried and hot-curled it daily, and it really looked good! The two things I worried about were haircutting and relaxing--things I thought I needed a hairdresser to do. After suffering numerous setbacks because of those two issues, in 1996, I chopped most of my hair off and decided not to relax my hair anymore. For the next five years, my hair looked awful--I didn't know how to comb or style it. I was not able to find a hairdresser that wanted to do natural hair. In 2001, I allowed an old friend (a hairdresser) to perm it. It looked great, and my hair grew long again, but after a few more hairdresser mishaps, I thought: "Enough is enough. NO MORE relaxers or perms!"
The last relaxer I received was in March 2005. I didn't know what I was going to do with my hair, but I knew that I absolutely did not want to use any more chemicals. I spent the next year blow-drying and flat-ironing my hair. It took some time for me to realize how completely damaging that was. I stumbled upon a few hair forums on the Internet, and became completely fascinated with the information available! I was now SURE that natural hair was the way for me to go.
I learned so much about transitioning (first the 'mind' and then the hair), natural hairstyles, products, and hair health in general from the hair forums. Armed with this knowledge, I gained the confidence to cut off all my relaxed hair in May 2006. I did another chop in August 2006 to get rid of most of the damage from the year of heat abuse my hair suffered while transitioning.
Right now, my only goal is to have beautiful, healthy natural hair.
