Eduardo Castanho
Eduardo Castanho is one of South America’s foremost living architectural photographers. He has spent more than three decades earning accolades of his field with a unique vision of the urban landscape, especially that of his native São Paulo.

In addition to being one of the most highly-lauded masters of architectural photography, Castanho’s contributions to the culture of Brazil and the entire world, include work as curator and judge, as teacher and scholar. He has been featured in the most prestigious museums, the most powerful cultural organizations and the most important events. His oeuvre has been reviewed by the major media and has received many prestigious awards.

After he received a bachelor’s in Human Communication, he was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study in the United States, where he attended courses in photography and cinema at the California Institute of The Arts (CAL-ARTS) Valencia, California.

In 2001, his unmatched architecture photographs earned him the Porto Seguro Photography Award, Brazil’s most highly prized photographic award. His work is seen in many museums, gallery exhibitions, and collections, including the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and the Itau Cultural Visual Arts Encyclopedia, among others.

He is author of outstanding books, including São Paulo Colors and Feelings, The Book about Tietê River, and New Horizons: Mural painting in Brazil. His famous photographs are featured in magazines, newspapers and art books such as The History of Brazilian Art, which has brought the vast world of Brazilian art to thousands of art researchers and students.

Castanho is also a skilled writer and acute thinker on aesthetic questions. As a scholar he was chosen by the Brazilian Department of Foreign Affairs to write the photography chapter for the CD-ROM Brazil in Focus, which was distributed worldwide to spread Brazilian culture. His well-received paper, “A Look at the History of Photography in Brazil”, explores the history of photography from the nineteenth century to the present through the work of ninety-three Brazilian photographers. Furthermore, he has written many technical pieces, as well as reflections on the work of an array of photographers.

In addition, Castanho has been a leading figure in promoting photography through exhibitions, symposia and courses. He designed, coordinated and curated numerous shows such as the first Brazilian Photojournalism Biennial, Brazil in the Time Machine, Amazonian, and the first edition of the International Month of Photography, which received the 1993 APCA Visual Art Award from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. The International Month of Photography is a biennial festival organized by NAfoto (Center for Friends of Photography), a non-profit photographic arts and educational organization, of which Castanho is a co-founder. In the two editions that he served as curator (1993 and 1995), these photographic events showcased legendary photographers such as Joel-Peter Witkin, Graciela Iturbide and Walter Rosenblum, and attracted over 200,000 visitors from all over Brazil and South America.

Castanho served three terms as Chief Curator of Photography at the São Paulo Museum of Image & Sound. In this Museum he created and led an unparalleled course, entitled “Photography by Author”. Its classes promoted an ample site of communication and exchange between Brazilian photographers and acquired a national dimension, becoming an event of interest for the general public.

He also participated as a teacher and lecturer in educational programs for art festivals and cultural organizations, including São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and the Winter Art Festival of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. His courses and lectures explored the possibilities, realities, and techniques of the photographic medium, and always draw more people then they can hold. Castanho’s teaching activities made important contributions to the photographic community in Brazil, including introducing new talent such as Cassio Vasconcellos, Eustáquio Neves and Rafael Assef.

Over the course of thirty-six years, Castanho has built an international reputation for excellence in photography. He has been invited to participate in programs for many museums and organizations outside of Brazil, including FotoFest in Houston, Texas, Mois de la Photo in Paris, France, Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland and Fox Talbot Museum in Lacock, England.

His achievements provide valuable insight into how a master architectural photographer approaches the medium; with great intelligence, creative, modesty, and above all, a distinct sense of purpose. His talent and extraordinary ability in his field of endeavor are recorded not only on the Internet but also in the archives of eminent publications in South America such as Folha de São Paulo (Brazil’s largest daily newspaper) and Fotografe Melhor (Brazil’s largest imaging magazine).

He has resided in New York since 2004. In addition to working as a Market Research Analyst for the leading photography group in the world (B&H Photo - Video), Castanho is currently photographing some of the most important examples of architecture in the United States for a book and exhibition project.
