This page is to track my loc journey. I transitioned to locs April, 2007. Prior to locing I was natural for a couple years and basically rocked fros and two-strand twists.

My decision to go natural was based on the fact that I wanted healthy hair. Prior to cutting my hair I had a bald spot in the middle of my head and I knew after reading and research that my destiny would be wigs and weaves if I continued to burn my hair out. I have a very sensitive spot in the middle of my head and all perms are to strong for my scalp. I can’t count how many times I would come home with burns in my head which would later turn into sores… I don’t miss those days at all.

Initial reaction:
I got a lot of negative energy from older African American women. Here are some of the comments and questions: “Locing is not professional; you can’t work in corporate America with loced hair”. “What’s wrong with your hair”? do you comb your hair?, why does it look frizzy? Most men don’t like loced/natural hair and the guy I was dating at the time did not like it at all. He was use to my permed hair and he could not adjust to the twist…. everyone has a preference of what they like and I’m cool with that...…. what-ever makes you happy makes me happy; Peace brother. (I will say that since I’ve been natural/locing it’s allowed me to see who’s genuine---My hair does not make me, but my inner beauty is phenomenal as I continue to grow in my sprit and become the woman God is calling me to be). When I decided to loc, it was a personal decision and I needed no one’s approval. I am a child of God and unless he closes the door nothing can stop me.

Loc Maintance:
I maintain using the latching method; I go to my loctian every 8 weeks. She states "by palm rolling, you actually damage the locs, and as it grows it will pop off".(Please don’t argue with me, I’m just the messenger.) In the meantime I wash and condition with whatever is in the bathroom. I work out and sweat a lot so I wash often.
