Harana...UPDATES!!!! Nov 09
Hello and welcome to my little piece of e-space!

I've been completely natural since 2002. I stopped relaxing because my hair wasn't as thick as I knew it could be and it would only grow to my shoulders. I didn't think natural hair would be attractive on me, but I knew I wasn't feeling my skinny skinny ponytails anymore.

So I wore braids from my transition in 2001 all the way through 2006. And when it wasn't in braids, I pressed it. I didn't feel attractive when my hair was in its natural state at all. The turning point for me was in October of 2006. After lurking around Fotki, LHCF and Nappturality, I found out that oiling my scalp was NOT the same as moisturizing my hair. And that blowdrying and flatironing every 2 weeks on the highest possible heat setting was murdering my precious hair. In my mind, I was taking great care of my hair but I soon realized I was doing more damage than good.

Marcus Garvey, the founder of the Back to Africa movement, said it best, "Don't remove the kinks from your hair. Remove them from your brain." Aha! Although I had stopped living the lye and transitioned my hair, I had not transitioned my mind to accept and embrace my natural crown and glory. That's why I would never wear my natural hair out in public and that's why I would press my hair at the first sign of a kinky curl. So I committed to learning as much as I could about my natural hair and embarked on a journey towards optimal healthy hair.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :-)

Thanks to all who've inspired and encouraged me to stay the course. I've learned so much from many of you and hope that sharing my journey - the ups and the downs - can help some of you out as well.
