- Hello Natural Hair Community,
I haven’t even met my hair yet. I just permed my hair and was researching full lace wigs, front lace wigs, curly weaves, straight weaves, purple wigs and pink wigs. I went to you tube to check out hairstyles, and decided what kind of weave I wanted to buy. I decided to close my lap top wrap my hair and go to bed……………….. But!!
On the right side of the screen was a video titled “The truth about black women and their hair”. I thought it was going to be something racist or ignorant. I watched the video and damn near cried. It was powerful. I stayed up all night watching documents of women and their hair journeys. I was inspired and freshly permed.
I have always worn my hair short but not shorter than 3”. I cut my hair in ’94 and never looked back. I would get a weave every blue moon. And I have never worn a fro. I have been every color from pink to platinum, Twiggy’s Bob to Mohawk. I am an 80’s kid and I have always been alternative and confident with my skin. I don’t go to salons I have been self mutilating since I cut it. I have always used natural products my body. But I never treated my hair with the same respect. I have dyed it, fried it and permed it to death. I don’t have any bald spots or noticeably damaged hair Thank God! I didn’t realize how much damage I was doing to it. All those chemicals and heat directly on my scalp really didn’t sound like a logical idea any more.
So I decided to extend the care that I give to my skin to my hair. I didn’t even know I could use the same products (olive oil, shea butter, jojoba, coconut ect..). I can’t say that I plan to have a big chop. Because I have been telling my family and husband that I would grow out my hair for at least 7 years. But I was never patient enough for anything longer then 6” long. I plan to transition from October ‘08 – October ’09.
Sooooooo….. I said all that to say that this is my hair journey from permed to natural. Thank you for sharing this with me! - General Information
