Growing up I believed that I was cursed with " Bad Hair". When I was a child it was very short and spongy and there wasn't much you could do with it. My sister would braid it to try and make it grow. When I was is in preschool I recieved my first chemical hair alteration. It was a jheri curl. It was wet and greasy but it made my hair more manageable and it finally began to grow. Almost all of my family members wore their hair this way at that time. I graduated to my first relaxer in the first grade and it felt like a rite of passage.

Brainwashed from an early age, I was groomed to feel more beautiful when my hair was straight, manageable, soft, and long. I loved it because it felt like my baby doll's hair. I taught myself how to braid it, curl it, and then to relax it. When I started highschool, I became more conscious about my hair and how to take care of it. My grandmother came to live with us and she would press my hair between relaxers and eventually I stopped relaxing my hair.

My grandmother passed away and I soon grew tired of the greasy, burned ear process of pressing my hair. I went back to a relaxer and fell in love with wrapping my hair. This was a protective style that kept me from burning my hair out with curling irons(until my edges started thinning from brushing and tying my hair down with tight satin caps at night). I also had breakage and the relaxers would make my scalp build up with cakey dandruff. Despite the scalp burns, aleopicia, and flaky scalp I still achieved the ideal straight, flowing hair.

I fell out of love with my chemically straightened hair when I moved on campus in college. I lived in a dorm with 3 caucasian girls who were very inquisitive about my hair rituals. They wanted to know why I wrapped up my hair at night, used so many oily hair products, and shampooed my hair less often. They asked why I never wanted to go swimming and even why I wore a shower cap. None of them understood and I envied how effortless their hair was. It naturally had all the characteristics I altered my own hair to achieve. I wanted the same freedom and pride in my hair that they had.

I started reading books and life stories about my ancestors and was awaken when I discovered the history of our hair and why we began to alter it. I was disgusted by the information I found and decided that I wanted to free myself and my hair to be what God created it to be.

I have fallen in LOVE with my natural hair!!! I'm never going back to the hair crack!!
