At a very young age my mother gave me a perm. I remember feeling very pretty and thinking that my hair was just like my Barbie doll’s hair lol. Ever since that day I got perms regularly, every month. In high school my long hair gave me confidence. Having straight hair was my high and perms were my drug, my addiction. But I still was amazed at the natural haired beauties I saw walking the runways on television or smiling at me in the magazines. Though I rarely saw such beauty around me in my everyday life, I always secretly wished I had the guts to do it. In my third year of college, I began to find myself. I was no longer living for my parents and was becoming more independent. Living on my own as a struggling college student really forced me to evaluate the health of my hair and if I really wanted to dish out tons of money to straighten it all the time. In December of 2007 I declared to my family that I was “going natural.” Of course, everyone laughed and thought I was joking or that I was going through some kind of phase, but I was definitely serious. I cut my hair into a bob and began my transition in January of 2008. I transitioned for 6 months and finally cut the relaxed hair out. Check out my journal for the details**. My hair is soooo much healthier and stronger than before. Im amazed at the texture and beauty I tried all my life to cover up. Im not ashamed of my hair and I don’t mind standing out lol. My confidence no longer lies in my hair texture or its length; I love me for who I am and no one can take that away. Be naturally you ladies and enjoy the journey, you might get more out of it than just hair ;)
