- Hello everyone. My name is Keria, and I'm starting my natural hair journey! Last relaxer was 5/9/09, right before my senior prom.
My story seems to be typical of others who have transitioned in the hair-growing community. As a child I had very thick 3C hair that would shrink like nobody's business. My mother would always put my hair into 4 thick braids, or a couple of "doodle" like twists. When I turned 11, I was tired of pulling my hair into a poofy slicked back pony-tail. So I had my hair pressed for the first time. You have to understand, I NEVER went to hair salon before. My hair was rarely trimmed, so my freshly straightened hair easily fell to mid-back length. I was ecstatic, especially when my white girlfriends exclaimed, "Oh my GOD! You're hair is longer than mine!"
I was hooked. I went back for presses probably once a month, but each time they lasted a shorter amount of time. The Florida humidity was terrible for my curly hair, and I began to get frustrated. Enter the creamy-crack phase. I begged and begged my mom for a relaxer, until she finally gave in. At age 13 I had my first relaxer and I loved it. I maintained BSL hair until my hairdresser cut it due to heat damage. I was scarred, because SL hair was so new to me. My hair never did grow quite back to BSL.
Now, I have just turned 18 and have seen lots of ups and downs with my hair. I have always had APL-SL relaxed hair until recently, due to dry and damaged ends. I had my first weave put in for my senior prom, but it was a new hairdresser that didn't have a CLUE what she was doing. She cut my hair without asking, so I was barely at SL. I was devastated, because I love me some long hair. That's when I found Long Hair Care Forums. I decided to transition after I took the weave out.
I know that transitioning will be hard. Especially since I am about to a be a freshman in college- when its all about lookin' fly, and having perfect long hair. I am a long-term transitioner for that reason. Hopefully my Fotki will help anyone who is looking to transition without the use of weaves (for some reason I can't wrap my head around hair that isn't mine, literally), wigs, and bunning (until my hair is long enough). I can't cornrow, I suck at Bantu Knots.
I plan on transitioning for 1.5-2 years. I doubt I will have the urge to BC before then, knowing how bad the shock will be to me. I am transitioning as a final phase of self-acceptance. It's time to redefine beauty. If I was supposed to have long, straight hair, God would have made me with such hair.
As far as hair typing-- I feel like I am 3C hair that has very high shrinkage. As a kid, my dripping wet, APL coils would shrink to shiny, NL curls.
