Hola and welcome to my hair diary! Don't let my nickname, "Latinegra," fool you. Latin/Hispanic is my culture, but Black (Negra) is my ancestry and heritage. My curly, kinky hair is God's handiwork and has been blessed by Mother Africa herself. I created this diary to document my hair journey, chart my progress, and share with others.

I used to have my hair chemically relaxed for many years. First, as a child by an adult relative who felt she couldn't "manage" my hair, until 1993. I was chemical-free for almost four years then, it happened...I relapsed in 1997. I went back to the relaxer because I felt that relaxed hair was more "office friendly" and I grew tired of answering all of the questions from strangers. I grew so addicted to the chemical relaxer that even after a nightmarish, professional relaxer application, and I lost my hairline, I still went back to the salon (just a different one) for my chemical "fix."

On October 19, 2002, I woke up and realized that that wasn't what I wanted for myself or my hair. I wanted to love myself the way God made me, and the concepts of:

* Being DEPENDENT on the beautician every 3 months,
* Waiting for HOURS at the salon for the beautician to do a few other heads of hair while doing mine, taking a break to eat her lunch or check on her kids, and even do her own hair, while I sat there waiting,
* Having the beautician apply CAUSTIC chemicals to my head,
* Sometimes suffering BURNING, SCABS and that oh, that nasty SMELL, and
* Losing my fragile HAIRLINE,

just didn't make sense any more. My relaxed hair was cute, but at what price? And that fact that I repeated the cyclical routine like a hamster on a wheel seemed idiotic. I WAS A FOOL!

Since going natural this time around, at times, it's been a hard, lonely road. There is almost no one in my every day life that I can talk to about hair. I almost wanted to give up and go back to the chemicals, until I was fortunate to have found 2 glorious websites that celebrate my kind of hair: NaturallyCurly.com and OurHair.net. I'm still on my hair quest, but I know now that I'm not going it alone. This is a work in progress, so please bear with me.
