Black Dominican female that transitioned from relaxed hair to 100% natural hair. I'm having fun on Fotki making new friends and learning so much about my hair. I've learned that we have beautiful hair that God has given us and we need to embrace it.

Hair type: Crazy! 3b/3c/4a (I try not to get into the hair typing too much)

GOALS FOR 2009: My goal is to continue growing and not trimming my hair for a year. I want 18 inches length hair by Dec. 09. Waist length or bust!

For those of you transitioning... doing the "big chop" might be a little scary. I know that the fear of having short hair is what stopped me from having natural hair.. but lemme tell ya it is the most liberating feeling in the whole world. Whoever doesn't like my nappy hair can basically kiss my ass LOL I play with my curls all day, I love the feeling and texture of my hair. Its funny because I thought I would miss my old hair and I don't. After 9 months of transitioning I felt very bitter about my relaxed ends. I felt like it was in my way and not really my hair. So to me it felt natural to cut it off, it was like cutting off a piece of my life that just didn't suit me anymore. Like if I was wearing a wig. Plus I was afraid that it would hinder my progress. Now my natural hair is growing like a weed LOL and I haven't looked back since. I look forward to having long hair again, but this time on MY terms.

I also have a blog about my progress, I did it mainly for anybody out there that wants to transition so they can "see" with their own eyes how it all happened for me. My so-called hair regimen:

1. I co-wash every day. If I use shampoo (2x a month), I'll buy a cheap one and I dilute it with water. I don't scrub my scalp hard. I'm experimenting with Shakakai (Indian powdered shampoo) to wash my hair.
2. Normally I use a Dominican deep conditioner like Diez en Uno, La Bomba or something with Sabila (aloe vera)
3. I Henna my hair every 6-8 weeks to dye my hair and hide the greys
4. I use Aphogee protein treatments on my hair every 8 weeks
5. I try to rollerset my hair once a month, use a bonnet hair dryer to dry my hair, then flat iron on a low setting. I always use a hair serum before applying any heat. I don't blow dry or use a curling iron.
6. When I give my hair a rest from rollersetting and heat, I leave it in a ponytail and use natural Aloe Vera gel, EcoStyler Gel, or Tresemme mousse.
7. I love cheap Suave coconut conditioners, but any conditioner will do really. I will use a deep conditioner first then follow up with a leave-in conditioner.
8. For moisture treatments I like either coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil & honey. I will usually leave it on my hair for an hour before I rinse it out. I also now love Kid's Organic shea butter moisurizing lotion and a leave-in. Right now I'm also using Amla Powder to help grow my hair, protect it, and make it strong.
9. I'm all about natural products now. If I can't eat it I don't want it in my hair LOL Here are some of my favorite natural recipes: http://styles101.homestead.com/nathairrec.html#anchor_35822 I am always experimenting with natural products. Right now I'm loving Aloe Vera Gel on my hair instead of regular gel. I only use Henna to color my hair. If I need a deep oil treatment I use the products that are already in my kitchen.
