I'm a student scientist. I decided to open a Fotki to share pics of my hair which I am so infatuated with. If you are not natural, this may seem over the top to you. I am infatuated because growing up a black female, I got negative comments about my type of hair. My mother relaxed it, curly permed it, burned it, braided it with extensions, you name it. I'd bought into the nappy is ugly bandwagon yet loved to feel up my new growth. Every touch up time I felt like doing a big chop but was afraid because the only good comments I ever did get about my hair was about the length.
Well, in 2002, I did it. My fiance at the time cut all the permed hair off. It must have been hard at first to go baldy all at once but I don't recall that at all. And besides, I LOVE MY HAIR. And it's all mine. It's real. It's a very liberating feeling. Now that my length is back, I get compliments constantly. Eventually, I found other naturals on nappturality.com and we support each other and share pictures and advice. It's really necessary because I have no natural friends.
Whenever a black person compliments my hair, the next comment is always "my hair couldn't do that" or "I HAVE to perm" or "I don't have good hair like you." That is really so sad because I don't have "good hair" either. The major problem is that we were never taught how to properly care for our hair. It's a learning process which is made so much easier by those who have gone ahead of us and know the tricks. For example, I have learned from nappturality never to put shampoo in my hair again.
So, I am adding my contribution to the natural community to show how beautiful our hair really is naturally. If I can inspire just one person to give up damaging their hair with relaxers, I would have paid it forward. Thanks for visiting my Fotki.
