Nooo, I don't do my own hair and never have even when I had a perm. I do nothing to my hair in between salon visits other than wrapping it up every night and apply light oil/grease when needed. As for the front of my hair, my stylist used to use just a little extra clear gel in the front until it got trained to help kepp it lay down. I started my locks with two-strand twist. Below is my routine.
I have a very itchy scalp so I use KeraCare anti-itch shampoo and conditioner which is expensive but I like it. My stylist twists (and or palm rolls when needed) with SalonCare Aloe Vera gel and greases my scalp with Nature's Blessing hair grease like 15 minutes before I am totally dry (well I am never totally dry when I get from under the dyer but close enough) so it kind of gives my locks a hot oil treatment. I use Carol's Daughter Khoret Amen Oil and or the Nature's Blessing again on my scalp every 6-10 days depending on the weather. I know that many say that using products causes build up but my scalp will drive me crazy if I don't apply oil or grease and whenever I do use these products, I do so sparingly. My stylist gets my locks squeaky clean every three weeks and I haven't noticed any build up to date. That’s my regimen which I am sure wouldn’t work for all but it’s working for me.
