I'm a Native American hoop dancer/northern fancy dancer and filmmaker based in Southeastern Massachusetts. My journey as a Native dancer began in 1991 when I started learning the history of my Mohawk ancestors, and in 1993 my life changed forever when I joined the Navy and moved to San Diego. It was after boot camp that I met Navajo fancy dancers Eric RunningPath and Kim Flying Eagle, brothers who had a Native dance group in S.D. They took me under their collective wing as the "token eastern woodlands dancer," and Kim became my hoop dance mentor, somewhat reluctantly at first, and set me on the path to bringing the hoop dance back to New England, where it hadn't been seen on over 30 years. Summer 1994, I officially brought the hoop dance back to Indian Plaza and other powwow sites in New England, and since then (more specifically, since my permanent return to New England in 1997), I've been more or less the only full-time hoop dancer in all six New England states. That's not to say I'm the only one...there are two others that I've met, both very talented. I only mean I'm the only one that keeps a full schedule of performances each year...that is, until I retire and my brother Corey (8 years old, compared to my 31 years, as of June 2004) takes over for me full time.
