| | Seek Ye First | I was one of the permies who permed their hair because they thought that was what your were supposed to do. Perming went along with taking a bath every day, going to church on Sundays, buying gifts for loved ones on their birthday. Its just something that you did. It wasn't until I was in graduate school did I realize that not only was perming not required, it was actually quite damaging. But I still kept on doing it. Well eventually, after wearing braids for 7 months so that I wouldn't have to perm, I decided to cut all the permed hair off. So with my last perm ever being in March of 2003, I became fully napptural on October 16, 2003. It wasn't planned, it just happened. I had taken out my braids and was looking for the braid lady to hook me up, but she wasn't around. So I stopped at the first barber shop I saw. I told them to cut all the perm off and shape my head and they did. Voila. Its been over 3 years since my last perm and although I've enjoyed my time being napptural, it hasn't been without struggles. I'm still trying to find the easy, low maintenance hair style that isn't time consuming and easy to do. I've also had major challenges with tangling, knotting, shedding and breakage, but I attribute all of those problems to my own laziness and not to being napptural. | |
