- Hello, this is Siditty. I have been natural for almost 10 years, but ceramic flat iron free only a few years. I have loved learning how to work with my own curly hair these last few years. I am a recovering product junkie who is converting to learning how to make my own hair and skin concoctions, but the urge to buy still hits every once in a while. If you want to see more about my hair journey, I blog about it over here @ http://afroncurls.blogspot.com & I blog about everything else here http://siditty.blogspot.com
My hair story. I went natural, not because I had any kind of awakening, but rather I hated relaxers. They burned my scalp, so I avoided them like the plague. I did my final relaxer back in 1999, and my then boyfriend (now husband) saw the pain I was going through and the scabs on my head left by a kiddie relaxer, and asked why I was relaxing my hair, I couldn't give him an answer except because I was supposed to and my hair would look ugly without one. I have since learned to love my hair as it grows out of my head :) As a result I quit relaxing my hair. I did not do a big chop, I didn't know I was supposed to back then, we didn't have all the natural hair resources like we do now, but I can safely say almost ten years later, I am completely relaxer free.
For the longest time I would flat iron my hair, but that just left it damaged and dry all the time, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try a new look. So a few years back I found a website called http://www.naturallycurly.com and got some great information, along with a book called Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey, and that forever changed how I looked at my hair. I then started finding sites like http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/, http://www.nappturality.com/, http://motowngirl.com/content/, http://www.afroglitz.com/, and videos on youtube from folks like Najahface (http://www.youtube.com/najahface). I was ready to go and from there it has been a love affair :)
My hair routine is fairly straight forward. I try to wash my hair two or three times a week. I mostly co-wash with Suave Naturals, but to get rid of build up, I usually use vinegar and water as a way to clarify. After that I use my Suave Naturals in as a leave in conditioner, add some moisturizer (usually my coconut oil/unrefined shea butter concoction), some oil (usually a blend of olive oil, sweet almond, jojoba, or coconut oil), and then my curl definer such as Kinky Curly Curling Custard or Curls By Sisters Smith Wet Set Hair Pudding. On my non wash days I just use my daily moisturizer (coconut oil/shea butter concoction) and stretch my hair with my fingers and go!!!!!
On occasion I will do hot oil treatments (less in the summer, more in the winter). Right now I am in love with my honey and olive oil treatment, and I just created my own concoction with palm kernel oil, molasses, and peppermint oil. I am doing it about weekly or biweekly for the winter since the cold is so damaging to hair.
Over the last month or so I have been on a search and destroy mission for split ends. I have cut off an inch or two to make sure I have some healthy ends.
All in all my hair and it's hair routine is constantly evolving.
