My hair routine has completely changed! My new routine is below, but first let me share the two things that have categorically helped me grow my hair to the length and health that it is now.

1.) TRIM OFF SPLIT ENDS!! I visited a site early on in my journey and it preached about not cutting or trimming your hair until you're ready to wear it out (it stays in braids up until that point). Don't believe it! Split ends work their way back to the root and damage the otherwise healthy hair strand beaneth the split end. Once I bought professional hair scissors and started trimming split ends, my hair flousrished. I was able to retain length. My hair is thick from root to tip! Get rid of those straggly, thin ends, girl!

2.) Also, DETANGLING is not just to get rid of those knots. A hairdresser told me that hair sheds (obviously) and stays lost in your 'fro. Detangling ensures that lost shedded hair is extracted from your fro and doesn't cause further breakage or knots. Once I took detangling seriously i.e. sectioned hair and made sure each section was tangle and loose-hair free, I noticed that my hair was more "obedient".

So with those words of wisdom dispensed, I'll share my routine! I still wear my hair in extension braids most of the time. I want my hair to get to the length where if I don't want to style it that morning, I can throw it into a puff. My hair makes a small puff now, but I want it bigger ;) I tried wearing my natural out for 3 months, but boy it was hard work! So, what follows are my routines when my hair is in AND out of braids.

ROUTINE (BRAIDS):

Wash hair every week (or every two weeks!) using half a table spoon of Creme of Nature Moisturizing shampoo in a cup of water. I pour the shampoo-water concoction over my braids and wash. I don't try and get my hair squeeky clean and concentrate mainly on the scalp/roots and the back of my head where produce tends to build up.

After washing, I pour cool water over my hair/braids to seal the hair cuticles. While hair is still damp I spray with Infusium (Moisture of Normal). When hair is dry I spray with S-Curl.

During the week I spray with S-Curl every morning excepy on Sundays (when I wash my hair) and Wednesdays. On those days I spray Infusium on my hair.

That's pretty much it! Occasionally, I'll do a hot oil treatment but that's rare these days. I love the low maintainance of extension braids!

ROUTINE (HAIR UNLEASHED):

Wash with Creme of Nature Moisturizing shampoo once a week. I use a tablespoon diluted in a cup of water (like above).

I deep condition every two/three weeks with either Carol's Daughter's Tui Hair Smoothie or Miss Jessie's Rapid Recovery (love them both). I put it on while hair is damp then put a shower cap on, aluminium foil and then a towel. I leave on for at least an hour. I wash off and this is WHEN I TANGLE with I wide tooth comb. I don't detnagle evey week. I don't think it's necessary for my hair.

I moisturize with Miss Jessie's Baby Butter Creme (love the smell). I also use pure rosemary oil on my edges. Yes, straight from the bottle. I've read that isn't good but it's worked for me.

I trim whenever I see split ends or I don't want to force out a knot. I also trim when I undo my braids or re-braid and see crazy ends.
